The Biogas Program, initiated by SNV and developed in conjunction with the government of Vietnam, converts animal waste to energy via biogas digesters, producing clean and affordable energy for cooking. It also reduces the health and environmental problems associated with animal waste and the use of wood fuel for cooking.

Biogas Program (BP),
Most importantly, the project is improving the socio-economic status of Vietnamese rural households, particularly women and children. Biogas means instant cooking (i.e. not having to start a fire and wait for it to reach optimum temperature), as well as less time and labour spent collecting traditional fuels. Biogas is smokeless and does not require constant attention or blowing. The reduction in workload provides women with more time for family, income generation activities or education of children.
The project also reduces the economic and financial costs expended on fuel for increasing agricultural yields. What's more, bio-slurry, the by product of biogas production, can be used for agricultural purposes and generates even more savings for farmers.
In addition to the improvement of the environment at the household level, biogas plants help to reduce deforestation, by replacing wood burning for cooking purposes.
The project aims to:
- Construct 180,000 biogas plants by 2018
- Create 2,500 permanent rural jobs and train 2,000 people
- Reduce emissions by 589,125 tonnes CO2eq / year
- Reach 840,000 persons in 58 provinces, uses local skills and material
- Establish biogas enterprises
The project has won the Energy Globe Award (2006), the Ashden Award (2010) and World Energy Award (2012).
